Two low-level astronomers must go on a giant media tour to warn humankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth.
The movie tells the story of two low-level astronomers who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth. Written and Directed by Adam McKay.
Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) is a Michigan State University PhD candidate in astronomy and observes with the Subaru Telescope. Just inside Jupiter’s orbit at 4.6 au from the Sun, she discovers a previously unknown comet. He gets very excited at first. Professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) calculates that the comet is 9 km wide, will hit Earth in about six months, and is large enough to cause a planet-wide extinction that NASA has confirmed. Head of NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, Dr. Accompanied by Teddy Oglethorpe, Dibiasky and Mindy present their findings to the White House, but are met with indifference by US President Janie Orlean and her son Jason (who is also the White House Chief of Staff).
Oglethorpe urges Dibiasky and Mindy to leak their news on a morning talk show to the media. When show hosts Jack Bremmer and Brie Evantee take the matter lightly, Dibiasky loses his composure and lectures about the Earth’s grave threat, leading to widespread ridicule on the Internet. Dibiasky’s boyfriend publicly reprimands her, while Mindy attracts public attention for being handsome. Real reports of the comet’s threat receive little public attention and are refuted by the NASA Director of Orlean, one of President Orlean’s top donors and no astronomy background. When Orlean is embroiled in a sex scandal with a Supreme Court nominee, he diverts attention and increases the potential for public votes by confirming the comet’s threat, announcing a project that will use nuclear weapons to crash and deflect the comet.
The mission is launched successfully, but President Orlean abruptly cancels the mission when Peter Isherwell, the billionaire CEO of tech company BASH and another top donor, discovers that the comet contains trillions of dollars’ worth of rare earth elements. The White House agrees to commercially exploit the comet by smashing the comet in space and recovering parts that would fall from the ocean using new technology proposed in a diagram by BASH’s Nobel Laureates. The White House hires Mindy as its National Science Advisor, while disabling Dibiasky and Oglethorpe. Dibiasky tries to mobilize public opposition to the plan, but gives up under threat from Orlean’s administration. Mindy becomes a leading voice advocating for the comet’s commercial opportunities and begins a relationship with Evantee.
World public opinion is divided between those who demand the destruction of the comet, those who reject alarmism, those who believe that removing the comet will create jobs, and those who deny that the comet even exists. Dibiasky returns to his home in Illinois and takes a job as a cashier at a convenience store. He begins an affair with Yule, a thief he met at the grocery store. When Mindy’s wife learns that she has been cheated on, she confronts Mindy and returns to Michigan without her. Angered and frustrated by the administration, Mindy yells on live television, criticizing President Orlean for downplaying the impending doom and questioning humanity’s indifference.
Out of control, Mindy reconciles with Dibiasky as the ever-approaching comet becomes visible from Earth. Mindy, Dibiasky and Oglethorpe organize a protest campaign against President Orlean and BASH on social media, telling people “Just Look Up” and urging other countries to conduct their own comet response operations. China, India, and Russia are left out of the comet mining deal, so they prepare for a joint effort to deflect the comet, but an explosion occurs, destroying their spacecraft and leaving Mindy devastated. BASH’s attempt to smash the comet also goes awry, and everyone realizes that humanity is doomed.
Isherwell, Orlean, and two thousand others in their elite circles accidentally leave Jason behind and board a sleeper spaceship designed to find an Earth-like planet. Orlean offers Mindy two places on the ship, but Mindy refuses, choosing to spend one last evening with her parents, Dibiasky, Oglethorpe, and Yule. As expected, the comet slammed into Earth, causing a worldwide catastrophe and triggering an extinction-level event.
Leaving Earth before the collision, 2,000 people land on a lush space planet 22,740 years later, ending their cryogenic sleep in their capsules. They emerge naked from their spacecraft, admiring the habitable world. Orlean is immediately killed and eaten by a creature there. Creatures other than his own kind surround humans.
Your final scene shows the president’s son, Jason, emerging from the wreckage, surviving the comet, screaming for his mother, and still trying to post on social media using his phone.
