The song is written by Charles Thompson who called that performs under the stage name Black Francis. One of the most famous Pixies’ songs, “Where Is My Mind?” is a great example of the band’s off-kilter pop style. Francis said the lyrics were inspired by his scuba diving in the Caribbean.
Nearing the end of a scuba diving session, Francis ran out of air while ascending. At the surface, however, he was still wearing his gauges – in this state of hypoxia, he felt as if “his mind had been pulled from his body,” and the resulting disorientation inspired the lyrics he wrote upon returning to shore.
“I was holding my breath and going up when I ran out of air,” reminisces Francis. “At the surface, I had been singing a song in my head. When I went to write down the lyrics however it wasn’t there. My mind had been yanked from my body by the pressure and it created this spaced out feeling that I didn’t even realize was being influenced.”
Though none so effective as its use in Fight Club “Where is My Mind” which is the iconic Pixies’ song has been used in countless trailers, TV shows, advertisements and video games which connects the listener to the narratives on a deeper level and is one of the most memorable tracks off.
